Success at B7 or any other mountain ultramarathon is not only about physical and mental preparation, but also about having the right gear. If you are preparing for a similar race for the first time, here is what you should not be without on the course.
What is an ultra trail race?
An ultra trail race is a running race in mountain terrain that is longer than 42 kilometres – in other words, longer than a classic marathon. Well-known races include Lavaredo Ultra Trail, while in the Czech Republic you may know races such as LH24 or the legendary Beskydská sedmička (B7).
The course length varies from race to race – common distances include 50, 60, 100 or more kilometres. Long climbs, technical descents and unpredictable weather are typical for this type of race.

The mountains are unforgiving if you are not prepared
Weather conditions in the mountains can change very quickly – one moment you are being hit by strong wind, the next the sun is beating down, and showers can arrive without warning.
Preparing your gear has its own rules. Race organisers often require mandatory equipment, typically a phone, headlamp or ID. In addition to that, the right clothing is essential – otherwise, the race can easily turn into suffering.
Smart layering is the foundation
The key to success is a combination of layers that you can easily add or remove depending on the weather, intensity and terrain.
Two basic rules always apply:
- Comfort: ideally choose clothing you have already tested.
- Functionality: breathable materials for summer, wind protection for autumn.
These rules should guide the rest of your gear selection.

First layer: breathable functional underwear
The first layer must wick sweat away to help prevent overheating and chilling.
Proven materials:
- Synthetics: lightweight, stretchy and quick to wick sweat away
- Merino wool: regulates temperature, resists odour and feels comfortable against the skin
Second layer: insulation for cold mornings
A mid layer helps maintain thermal comfort, especially in colder weather.
If you do not need it, it is better to leave it out – overheating will only slow you down unnecessarily.
Proven materials:
- Synthetics: wick sweat away and breathe well
- Fleece: provides warmth and dries quickly
Third layer: protection from the elements
The third layer is often mandatory – it protects against rain and wind. Ideally, carry a membrane jacket for rain and a lightweight windbreaker for windy conditions.

Clothing for the lower body
Compression clothing is a good choice because it supports blood circulation and recovery. It also fits closely and provides warmth.
TIP: always test it before the race – anything that feels uncomfortable at the start will become a problem later.
Shorts vs. leggings:
- Shorts: warm weather, higher intensity
- Leggings: cold, wind and protection against scratches
Trail running shoes
Trail running shoes have a durable construction and a grippy outsole. Look for a balance between comfort and stability – more cushioning for longer distances, more stability for technical terrain.
Running vest or backpack?
A vest fits better, bounces less and gives you quick access to your essentials.
A backpack is useful when you need to carry more gear, but in most cases, a vest is enough.
Trail running poles
Poles help during climbs and take some pressure off your legs. Test them before the race – they should be stable and quick to fold.
